Vallisneria, often referred to as eelgrass, tape grass, or simply “Vals,” is a classic and hardy aquarium plant known for its long, grass-like leaves. It’s a favorite for aquascaping and is widely used for creating a natural, underwater “meadow” look.
Features
Appearance: Vallisneria has long, ribbon-like leaves that can grow several feet tall, often reaching the surface and floating. The leaves are a vibrant green, creating a beautiful contrast in aquariums.
Size: The leaves can grow up to 24 inches or more, making it ideal for background or side areas in aquariums.
Growth Rate: Fast-growing when provided with the right conditions, making it excellent for reducing algae by competing for nutrients.
Water Conditions: Prefers temperatures between 68°F – 82°F (20°C – 28°C) and a pH range of 6.5 – 8.5, though it’s very adaptable.
Lighting: Low to moderate lighting works well, but more intense light can encourage faster growth and lushness.
Care Tips
Substrate: Vallisneria is a root feeder, so a nutrient-rich substrate is beneficial. Root tabs can also help keep it thriving.
Pruning: Trim leaves as needed to prevent overgrowth, especially if they reach the water’s surface.
Propagation: Propagates via runners (side shoots) that spread naturally, making it easy to create a full, dense area over time.
