This year’s theme, Hawaiʻi ma ka pili kai, Hawaiʻi at the water’s edge, explores 12 significant shoreline places and cultural landmarks on the eight main Hawaiian Islands. In 2016 John Clark donated his Beaches of Hawai‘i Photo Collection to the Hawaiian Historical Society. These black and white images, captured by various photographers between 1974 and 1989, are part of John’s Clark’s first four publications, Beaches of: the Big Island; Kauaʻi and Niʻihau; Maui; and Oʻahu. The photos for each month of our 2025 calendar were selected from this collection, with descriptions written by Clark.
